Court filings are public records, and they appear as cases are filed. We count every case filed in both county courts, so we can see when one kind of case starts to climb.

How we measured this

We counted every case filed in the St. Louis County and St. Charles County circuit courts from January 1 to September 30 of 2024, 2025 and 2026, as listed on Missouri Case.net on October 21, 2026. The same nine months in each year keep the comparison fair. These are cases filed, not cases won. A filing does not mean anyone was evicted or lost a home.

How many evictions were filed?

Are more homes going into foreclosure?

We can only see part of the answer. Missouri lenders can sell a home through a trustee without going to court. One large trustee firm listed 969 Missouri foreclosure sales between August 31 and October 20, 2026. Only 10 of them listed a court case number.

Court cases are the part we count. In St. Louis County court, 164 foreclosure cases were filed from January through September 2026. The same months had 95 in 2025 and 127 in 2024. Last year was low: its third quarter had 16 cases, while each quarter of 2026 has had 53 to 58. So we compare with 2024. Against 2024, court foreclosure cases are up 29.1%.

Four mortgage lenders and servicers account for the change. MidFirst Bank, U.S. Bank, Lakeview Loan Servicing and PennyMac Loan Services are the first-named filer on 80 of the 164 cases this year, up from 38 in the same months of 2024. At least 9 of this year's cases came from condo and homeowner associations, not lenders.

In St. Charles County, court foreclosure cases went from 63 in 2024 to 52 this year.

Read this with care. The rise in court cases is real. But on the one sale calendar we can see, 10 of 969 foreclosure sales listed a court case. So this rise does not show that foreclosures overall are rising. We do not yet have a long enough count of out-of-court sales to say.

What about debt lawsuits?

These are cases where a company sues a person over an unpaid account or bill.
